The coronation of King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla will take place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6 May.

The King’s coronation will be publicly screened at more than 30 sites across the UK.

Cities including LondonCardiff and Belfast will show the event live on big screens on Saturday 6 May.

Public screenings of the ceremony, which will include the coronation of Queen Consort Camilla, will also be held in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Hull, Bristol and Brighton.

A screening will take place in Scotland, though an exact location is yet to be confirmed.

More than £1m has been made available by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) for the big screens.

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer said: “The coronation will be a magical moment that brings people together to celebrate the best of Britain over a special weekend in May.

“These big screens, in major locations in towns and cities in the four nations of the UK, will make it easier for everyone to take part and have a memorable experience to mark this exciting and historic event.”

According to DCMS, 29 locations have already been confirmed. Seven more areas have also been agreed upon, with exact locations still to be confirmed.

Local authorities will be able to choose between using the funding towards one larger big screen site or a number of smaller screening sites, with Sunderland one of the areas set to choose the latter.

Further details of activities taking place alongside screenings will be announced by each local authority.

Activities will include cultural festivals, live music, community workshops, art showcases and creative games and competitions.

What will happen at the coronation?

As part of the weekend of events, a Coronation Concert will be held at Windsor Castle on Sunday 7 May, while iconic locations across the UK will be lit up using projections, lasers, drone displays and illuminations.

This will be followed by the Big Help Out on 8 May, which will see thousands of people volunteer to support the causes that matter the most to them.

The coronation itself will take place on 6 May at London’s Westminster Abbey – the place for crowning and hosting ceremonies for the last 900 years.
